  1. IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW ZIXMAIL USERS:
  2. ---------------------------------------------
  3. Thank you for downloading ZixMail!
  4.  
  5. Now that you have successfully installed ZixMail and its 
  6. companion utility, the ZixIt Signature Manager, you are just a
  7. few steps away from being able to send and receive secure email.
  8.  
  9. You may want to print this text and check off each step as you
  10. complete it, but in any case please follow these steps carefully:
  11.  
  12. Create your ZixIt Signature:
  13. ----------------------------
  14. First, you will use the ZixIt Signature Manager to create and then
  15. activate your new ZixIt Signature.
  16.  
  17. (1) To start, simply double-click the ZixIt Signature Manager icon
  18.     on your desktop.
  19.  
  20. (2) Then click the "Create New" button on the main ZixIt Signature
  21.     Manager window and follow the step-by-step instructions.
  22.  
  23. (3) After you create your ZixIt Signature, you will receive an
  24.     almost immediate confirmation message in your email inbox.
  25.  
  26. (4) Simply click the first response link, which indicates
  27.     acceptance of your newly created ZixIt Signature, and you are
  28.     ready to use ZixMail.
  29.  
  30. (5) Go back to the ZixIt Signature Manager and click the "Update
  31.     Status" button. You should see the "Status" of your ZixIt
  32.     Signature changed from "New" to "Active."
  33.  
  34. You may now create additional ZixIt Signatures for your other
  35. email addresses or close the ZixIt Signature Manager.
  36.  
  37. Use ZixMail:
  38. ------------
  39. Second, to begin using ZixMail, double-click the ZixMail icon on
  40. your desktop. Try sending your first ZixMail message to yourself
  41. as a test.
  42.  
  43. This will allow you to become familiar with ZixMail. After sending
  44. the ZixMail message to yourself, go to your email inbox and open
  45. the message. You will now have successfully used ZixMail and your
  46. ZixIt Signature to send and receive an encrypted ZixMail message.
  47.  
  48. NOTE: You may launch ZixMail or the ZixIt Signature Manager
  49. directly from the Windows "START" button (see icons at top of the
  50. "START" button menu).
  51.  
  52. Outlook Users:
  53. --------------
  54. You can use ZixMail to send and receive secure messages
  55. from within Outlook. 
  56.  
  57. To Send ZixMail in Outlook: 
  58.     - Create a new message as always - but - instead of clicking
  59.       "Send", simply click the big red "Z" button on the toolbar.
  60.  
  61.     - You will be prompted to enter your Signature Phrase and then
  62.       ZixMail message will be sent.
  63.  
  64. To read ZixMail in Outlook: 
  65.     - Select the message to be opened and click the "z" button.
  66.  
  67.     - You will be prompted to enter your Signature Phrase and then
  68.       ZixMail message will be displayed.
  69.  
  70. IMPORTANT: The ZixMail menu in the main Outlook window provides
  71. important options that you may want to select.  For example, you may
  72. want Outlook to remember your Signature Phrase until you exit the
  73. program.  Also, access to the ZixMail Signature Manager is provided.

  79. Web-based email users - Netscape browser:
  80. -----------------------------------------
  81. If you use Hotmail, Yahoo Mail or any other browser-based email
  82. system - the following tip may be very helpful.
  83.  
  84. When you receive a ZixMail message, it arrives as an attachment to
  85. a regular email message. When you download the attachment, your
  86. Netscape browser may give you the option of saving the attachment
  87. to disk or choosing an application to open it. Choose "Pick App"
  88. and then "Browse" - then navigate to or type in the program name
  89. C:\Program Files\ZixIt\ZixMail\ZixMail.exe to open the message.

  91. This should permanently associate the ZixMail program with this
  92. type of download file and allow the direct opening of future
  93. ZixMail messages received at your browser-based email address. 
  94.  
  95. Web-based email users - Internet Explorer browser:
  96. --------------------------------------------------
  97. Internet Explorer should be able to open ZixMail attachments
  98. directly from your email inbox. In some cases, you may have to
  99. respond with the "open" option twice to the question regarding
  100. "Open this file from its current location."
  101.  
  102. AOL users:
  103. ----------
  104. (1) Using the standard AOL 4.0 or 5.0 - you will be required to
  105.     download and save the ".zix" attachment and then double-click
  106.     it to open your ZixMail message. We understand that AOL 6.0 
  107.     will support the direct opening of ZixMail.
  108.  
  109. (2) If you pick up your AOL mail through a web browser (AOL.com),
  110.     then you may open ZixMail messages directly by following the 
  111.     Web-based instructions above.
  112.  
  113. ZixMail Help:
  114. -------------
  115. If you need more information or need to obtain quick answers to
  116. your questions, please visit the ZixMail home page at
  117. http://www.zixmail.com. You will find help for both ZixMail and
  118. the ZixIt Signature Manager by clicking the "ZixMail Help" tab.
  119. The help text pages are designed to be printable by any browser.
  120.  
  121. If the ZixMail Help pages do not answer your questions, contact
  122. the ZixIt Support Center by using the "ZixHelp Web Form," a link
  123. to which is found on the main ZixHelp page. This form will
  124. prompt you for essential data that will enable us to answer your
  125. questions.

  128. suggestions for improvements as well as tell us about problems.

  130. best possible program.
